What does a professional declutter actually cost in the UK — and is it worth it before you move?

Published 5 June 2026 · 6 min read

Living in a cluttered, disorganised home is quietly exhausting — the wardrobe you avoid, the cupboard you can't close, the spare room that became a graveyard. Then a move appears on the horizon, and the most stressful life event most of us will ever go through suddenly has a date attached to it. If you're searching for the price of a professional declutter, you almost certainly left it later than you wanted to. That's normal. Almost everyone does.

The honest answer on price

Most articles dance around this. We won't. Across the UK in 2026, professional decluttering and organising services price like this:

  • Hourly: £30–£65 per hour, with London and the South East at the top of the range.
  • Day rate: APDO-accredited specialists from £495 per day (typically a six- to seven-hour session).
  • Full-home sort: from £850 for a smaller flat, scaling with property size, contents and number of rooms.
  • Pre-move package: usually quoted as a fixed price after a short consultation — most fall between £1,200 and £3,500.

Prices vary by region, by the volume of decisions involved, and by how much donation, consignment and disposal coordination is included. A good organiser will quote a fixed price after a 15-minute call and a few photos — never an open-ended hourly meter on a job they haven't seen.

Why "I'll just do it myself" rarely works before a move

You almost certainly can declutter your own home. You've done it before. What changes before a move is the variable nobody factors in: emotional load. You are simultaneously negotiating a chain, packing a life, and being asked to decide — fast — what stays, what goes, and what you'll regret leaving behind. Under that pressure, most people freeze, and the boxes ship as-is to the new house, where the problem unpacks itself into a fresh set of rooms.

A professional brings three things you can't easily give yourself in that window:

  • Emotional neutrality. They have no memory attached to your old university hoodie or your grandmother's mismatched plates. They ask the questions; you make the call.
  • A decision-making system. APDO-accredited organisers run a tested framework (keep / donate / sell / recycle / dispose) so you make hundreds of small decisions without burning out.
  • Logistics handled. Charity collections, council bulky-waste bookings, eBay or Vinted listings, electrical recycling, textile recycling — coordinated for you, not added to your to-do list.

Is it worth it before you move? The real maths.

Moving fewer items costs less. A typical UK removals firm prices by van size and time — a good declutter routinely shaves an entire van load, a packing day, and several hours of unpacking off the bill. If decluttering cuts your removals invoice by even £400–£600 (very common on family-home moves), a £850 sort is already most of the way to paying for itself.

The harder-to-quantify return is the first week in your new home. The difference between walking into rooms that already make sense and walking into a wall of boxes you don't have the energy to face is, for most people, the difference between loving the new place and quietly resenting it for six months.

When to book

Ideally, four to six weeks before completion. That gives time for two or three sessions, charity collection slots (which are often booked two weeks out in busy areas), and any consignment or resale to actually convert into cash before you move. If your completion is sooner, a single intensive day still moves the needle dramatically — don't let perfect get in the way of useful.

What to look for in a UK declutterer

  • APDO accreditation. The Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers is the UK industry body — accredited members are insured and follow a code of ethics.
  • Fixed-price quote after a short call, not an open-ended hourly job.
  • Confidentiality written into the agreement.
  • Disposal and donation pathways already established with local charities and recyclers.
  • Reviews from recent clients, ideally including pre-move work specifically.
